Why you don’t want to buy email lists to promote your crowdfunding or project launch!

Buying an emails list is a legitimate email marketer's kiss of death. While buying an email list might seem like a shortcut and a cheap and easy way to build a list of subscribers, it can have a damaging effect on your reputation your campaign and can even get you banned by your email provider or campaign provider not to mention its Illegal.

The safest way to succeed on crowdfunding is still to run a proper pre-launch phase to build your own email list. I've created a free e-book about it: 3 simple steps to success on kickstarter and Indiegogo.

"Why shouldn’t you buy an email list?"

It’s illegal to sell or buy as the person whose email you have acquired has not given you permission to use it. It is a requirement by law that emails must include an opt out option and this doubles on the opt-in side of this relationship.

Purchased email lists are not compliant, you must have explicit consent from your contacts to send them emails. Good email address lists are not for sale - you will be wasting your money as you won’t get a high-quality email list that you can purchase. If it's for sale, it means the email addresses on it have already been deemed non-responsive or unqualified for marketing outreach.

People on these lists don’t know you or your campaign – Email addresses that have opted into certain companies don’t know who or what your company is and the fact that the recipient has no prior relationship with you specifically nor recalls opting into your company’s emails makes it highly likely for the recipient to mark you as “spam” when your email arrives in their inbox. It will also make it highly unlikely for your recipient to back your project too in any case, you will only be reported as spam.

"The Negative Effect "

People will get annoyed or angry if you force your email content on them too early. Helpful content and valuable campaigns will ensure that people subscribe and stay subscribed. The main problem is people don’t know anything about you so they will not buy from your company. They will open an email from a sender that they don’t know for a product they don’t want. Forcing your way into someone’s inbox without permission is like showing up to a dinner party hosted by someone you don’t know, uninvited. It’s definitely not the best way to start a relationship with a client or a customer.

Your email service provider can penalize you – Buying email lists will damage your deliverability and reputation and will also put your email address at risk. If your account is constantly marked as spam email service providers will limit your deliverability rate drastically as your recipient marks you as spam it will flag your email address as spam.

Furthermore, this won’t only have consequences on your email reputation but also on your business and campaign reputation, can you imagine how you feel when you get unsolicited emails in your inbox? because it adds clutter and distracts you from the emails you actually want to read you will only feel annoyed with the company and delete the email before you even open it. You could even find yourself in a spam trap, some email providers use anti-spam software to detect spamming emails, the consequences may lead to you being blacklisted or blocked from sending emails.

don't buy email list

Why would I want to buy emails to promote my crowdfunding campaign??

In order to reach the funding goal, we need to drive traffic over. The email list sellers sell you a dream, but this is not going to make any difference to your campaign as they also sell this information to a lot of other people. You will waste money for a disappointing outcome so you will have a blacklisted email and flags on your campaign.

Flags mean that your campaign will be blocked. It is a much better idea to grow your email lists organically, a small list of engaged readers will benefit your business a lot more than a huge list of uninterested ones and a large bounce back rate. Get your readers to opt-in by sending interesting and targeted emails, this is the best way to make sure you get the most out of your campaign.

If you have a big email list from another campaign you can send out an email about this new product launch. Send information about this new launch to try to convert the buyers to your new project launch before you ask them to subscribe.

This will give them an option to subscribe to this new email list which they are more likely to do so if they are fully interested, this will only benefit you more. This is a much better way of growing your email list organically and legitimately without the disappointment and empty pockets.

The goal is not to have a huge list of subscribers, but rather to have a full list of active subscribers. Contacts only benefit your campaign when you have a list of engaged subscribers.

Wrap up

Investing time into growing your email list will have so many more benefits than a quick fix. If you choose a quick fix this will only ruin or damage your sending reputation in the long run.

The time that you spend growing a good email list will pay off when you have a high-performing list of people who can’t wait to read your emails. So, make sure that you download and read my free eBook today to help guide you on growing your email list organically
