5 totally crazy kickstarter campaigns that got funded mattia di stasi

Kickstarter is the most known fundraising site, with thousands and thousand of new projects every day. Believe it or not, the platform is plenty of weird and absurd crowdfunding campaigns, most of them are also successfully funded!

In this article, we will see the famous Potato Salad that I wrote about some time ago and more other creative projects that reached popularity.

1. A POTATO SALAD

Back in 2014, a new campaign appeared on Kickstarter: ‘’Potato Salad’’ created by Zack Brown.
The description was ‘’I’m making a potato salad’’, that’s some serious stuff we’re talking about.. right?

Well, while you’re laughing, this campaign raised more than $55.000 on Kickstarter, overcoming a $10 goal.

There’s no serious intention behind it, that’s just it. Potato salad. But you know, the Internet is a weird, yet wonderful place. Basically, this campaign just became viral, and within 30 days it gathered around 7.000 backers! But in the end, it’s just marketing. And I think that it is a curious case study to analyze because this is how marketing is done in our modern times, and I did it here!

2. EDIBLE CUPS

Even if weird, I really love this product: Edible cups made of jelly to avoid plastic waste, amazing!

The idea is of a consulting firm called The way we see the world.

Jelloware are edible and biodegradable disposable cups, ecological and extremely practical and they managed to raise more than $10.000 with 229 backers!

The material is called agar agar and it derives from algae, already known in cooking as a gelling agent. There are three flavors: lemon and basil flavored, ginger and mint, rosemary and beetroot, each distinguished by its own characteristic color.

In this way, they will not only invade tables and parties with color but also infuse a pleasant flavor into the drink you are consuming. Jelloware is no longer just a container but an integrated part of the drink itself!

3. THE OSTRICH PILLOW

Have you ever felt the need to escape from the world and hide like an ostrich under the sand? No...?

Well, some people may have, that's why Studio Banana decided to create the Ostrich Pillow that isolates you from the surroundings and makes take a comfy nap everywhere.

Apparently, nearly 1.846 people wanted to take a power nap at work and backed this campaign with more than $195K!

This pillow has been designed to create a little private space to relax and unwind. It has soothing soft interior shelters and isolates you can put your head and hands for a short break, without needing to leave your desk or chair.

This is so cool! Comfortable for when you're on a trip or in a busy place and you need to unwind a bit, looking like an alien tho...

4. GRILLED CHEESUS

Okay, this is becoming a little bit chaotic, but Kickstarter really is full of crazy projects, in this case we have: Grilled Cheesus. I don't mean to be offensive, but that's the name the creator, Rob Corso give to his product, which is an ''electronic sandwich press that toasts the face of Jesus onto your sandwich bread''.

Yes, that's really a thing, so much appreciated from 286 backers that contributed with $25.000!

Such a great way to inspire your family at the dining room table or your children in the lunchroom. It’s also a fun way to impress your friends at a party or the congregation at your church coffee hour!

5. PIRATE PANCAKE GRIDDLE

Another food-related weird Kickstarter, another griddle!

If you love pirates and stuff related to that, than you may love this pirate pancake griddle launched in 2013 by its creator: Joe Sandor, which managed to involve 200 backers raising more than $18K!

This griddle really is nothing special, but it's so awesome that people backed it just because it was pirate-inspired, at least it will make tasty treats fit for a captain. This pirate pancake griddle has skull and crossbones cast into the pan, that will make your breakfast special and fun!

5. THE COOLEST COOLER

We've already talked about The Coolest Cooler multiple times but as a fail.

This time we will talk about its weirdness, yes, because The Coolest Cooler created by Ryan Grepper is more than a cooler and 62.642 people were so curious to try it, sadly it was never delivered to their backers!

What's so crazy about this cooler is that a humble cooler just becomes a super-duper accessorized cooler that has an ice-crushing blender, a Bluetooth speaker, a USB charger, a LED light, a cutting board, a bottle opener and so much more: it literally says “coolest” on the front. Is there anything that this cooler can't do?

Backers decided that this innovative cooler is exactly what the world needed, pledging more than $13 million and becoming one of the most funded projects on Kickstarter. Sadly, despite this success at raising funding, the project ended up being a disaster and in 2019, the founder finally closed the company.

Not so cool, huh?

WRAPPING IT UP

This is it for today, I'm sure you had fun discovering these crazy products on Kickstarter that were actually very successful and fully funded, some were just for fun like the potato salad, some were very helpful for a big cause like the Edible Cups and some really revolutionary like The Coolest Cooler.

The moral of the story is, you can launch any kind of product in crowdfunding, as long as you find your community that matches your interests and is ready to back your crazy product, but you have to deliver a compelling story and make people have fun , the chances to become viral are really high!

A crowdfunding launch requires a lot of hard work and sacrifices, but I'm sure that it will be worth it in order to start making your dream project come true.

Always remember that before launching your project you will need to analyze and prepare your pre-launch phase to launch your first product, I’ve got you covered with my crowdfunding pre-launch free e-book called ''3 steps to success on Kickstarter and Indiegogo''.
